Shotgun would be a good choice. Mossberg Maverick 88, stupid good quality for the price you pay ($250'ish). Throw an XS tritium front sight on it, and/or mount a rail on top for a red dot and you're good to go. 20" barrel holds 7 + 1.
Then you can mount shotgun cards, 1 (7 shell card) on the left side of the chamber area, the other (5 shell card) on the right side of the stock and you have a total of 20 12 ga shotgun shells onboard. Not much you can't solve with that.
NOTHING is more devastatingly, wickedly effective at close range than a shotgun. There's a reason it was called the trench broom / trench sweeper, and why the Germans wanted it declared inhumane as a weapon in WW1.
