Why on earth was that thing made of glass instead of acrylic?

A read a comment in a German board that it was made of acrylic. Maybe insurance fraud. The hotel lobby was due to renovation. The exploding energy costs may also have contributed...

There are also cracks in walls and ceilings of the hotel. The underground floors are under water. I´ll bet --> demolition.
