Back when I was I college, the student ID number was your SSN. Stores around town would take it as an ID and write it on checks. This was just as ATM machines were being introduced, so people wrote a lot of checks. My SSN was probably on hundreds of checks.
I would be pissed as hell if anyone publicly released any of my children's SSN - that's how crooks steal identities
