Puritans when they were in charge BANNED CHRISTMAS! They came over here for religious "freedom" but when THEY were in charge, they banned Christmas. OUR Republic does not allow an established state religion. We are not a Puritan state for Crying Our Loud! We have Christmas! AND a very very Merry Christmas indeed!
Saturnalia, held in mid-December, is an ancient Roman pagan festival honoring the agricultural god Saturn. Because of when the holiday occurred—near the winter solstice—Saturnalia celebrations are the source of many of the traditions we now associate with Christmas, such as wreaths, candles, feasting and gift-giving. This is why True Christians banned it, it is a pagan celebration much like everything the Catholic Church has incorporated into modern Christianity.
The winter solstice was a big deal in ancient cultures - the "return of the sun" meant that days stopped getting shorter and started getting longer again. Most of the things we associate with Christmas are actually borrowed from ancient Yule celebrations - not the Roman festival.
The early church tried to stop the Yule celebrations, but eventually gave up, adapted them to Christianity, and sort of took over the winter solstice holiday as the birthday of Jesus. That is how we ended up with a mix of the Christian celebration merged together with the decorated tree, wreaths, holly, mistletoe, caroling, yule log (bonfire), gift giving, red, green, gold and white holiday colors, and so on - all "borrowed" from ancient Yule celebrations.
It’s paganism, I don’t care if it’s celebrating the sun, or Saturn, it’s got nothing to do with Jesus or his birth or his ministry or his death. It is pagan and it shouldn’t be practiced by Christians in my opinion. Think about it, how many times we see Hollywood endorsing Christian things? What is the one holiday Hollywood goes out of their way to make movies and shows about? Why is that? Do you think Hollywood would endorse Christmas if it was truly Christian? You know the answer.
December 25th is the Babylonian feast of the return of the sun god Mithras/Tammuz - a type of satan - following the winter solstice. Nothing to do with the Birth of Jesus.
The early church 4th Century onwards sought to subsume many pagan feats eg easter into the church - why well they had been pagan just before the church became the state religion. It is also a control measure.
The Puritans sought to regain the truth for the church.
The problem is that lights, music, feasting all play to the sensual nature of man and turn him away from God.
There is no command in the Bible to celebrate His birth, only His death and Resurrection.
The only time we see men giving gifts to men is Revelation 11:10 when the people gave gifts because the Anti-Christ has killed God's two witnesses.
Trees - read Jeremiah 10 God says don't learn the ways of the gentiles bringing trees into their home and decorating them - a form of worship!
Yes ridding ourselves of all the nonsense - fat chap in the red outfit santa (note the anagram) didn't appear till the early 20th century!
BUT parents and the church persist in lying to children and one another. Is this realty worshipping in Spirit and Truth?
Finally consider this - before you became a Christian you worshipped satan - we all did - 25th December is his birthday, now at some point you changed that evil lover for the real love of Jesus, we are not told His birthdate nor to celebrate - there are excellent assessments of when it might have been but that's all - so why do we say to Jesus I don't know your birthday but I want to celebrate it on the same date as my previous evil lover - satan. How would that play out with you boy/girl friend or spouse! Precisely.
Yup. What is the one holiday Hollywood is not shy about, and make tons of films and shows with it? Yup Christmas gets the number one spot, and why is that? Are the leftist in Hollywood not the main pagan practitioners here in the United States?
They only care when people make it a Christian holiday. They could care less if you have a tree and gifts so long as Christ is never mentioned. Kinda ironic because Christmas is not Christian at all, but rather pagan.

Do you have a reference that the early church tried to stop the pagan midwinter festival but failed? Thanks in advance.

Used to be that way.
I figured it's for the money.
Now, however, they're subverting it.
