Yes, this technology is still in its infancy. There are issues with the generation of electrical energy in our current centralized production system. The dream is that every home will generate their own electricity and control the means of production. The current iteration of EV's suffer from a fatal flaw of highly toxic and a limited lifespan of energy storage. The hope is that an energy storage solution will be developed that will have a substantially higher lifespan and energy density. Unfortunately, we are still in the beginning and the flaws are readily apparent. You are correct to assume that EV's and battery storage technology will improve over time. Whether Elon is a white hat or black hat is debatable, but I am a firm believer in weighing all the evidence before a final judgement is made.
