When I was a kid, and I'm sure there were country folks who still had ice boxes but I never saw one, we used to go to the company that sold ice. They would bring out a big block of ice and grind it into chunks for the old fashioned wooden hand cranked ice cream maker Daddy used.
Tin foil must have been the precursor product, my gram used that name. Also called the fridge an icebox. Kek!
