I firmly believe that Trump only (publicly) gave up the fight about this because he had to focus on the greater war.

Had he continued, he would have sounded crazier in the eyes of the public, thus making it harder to get legitimately elected--and thus kick the plan into motion.

The truth will come out. But he conceded a small defeat for the sake of the greater victory.
