I remember looking for jobs at the state unemployment office when I was young. I was amazed at all of the positions and pay grades for the state. There were scheduled raises and openings for better positions to climb the ladder stated up front. Once you get in, you’re set. I’ve never seen a state worker in a hurry to get anything done, either, with one exception.
Many states got rid of Civil Service years ago. Nowadays, it's 'executive service' so you can be let go any day of the week with no reason and no recourse. Also, there's no disability coverage unless you pay for it and your pension is self-funded.
Also, there's no advancement or promotional opportunities unless you are politically connected. Directors give jobs to their friends and don't advertise advancement opportunities. Hiring and promotions are not based on merit or skill or achievements.
Bottomline, it's Who you know, not what you know or what you've done. Regular employees never even get a chance to excel.
In many ways, it's worse than private sector because you can't complain when the government itself is so corrupt that they don't follow state or federal rules. They lie all the time. Zero ethics.
I look forward to real change happening across the board.
I remember my grandmother begging me to apply for a government job. Any government job. That was the only thing that was permanent employment in her mind. She was right.
