I teach Gen Z college students. They are always on their phones or laptops in class. Instead of forbidding them from using their devices, I have set up my classes so there is a lot of material that they have to do on their devices. They stay engaged that way and they like that style of teaching. However, for Quizzes, I write a review on the blackboard and they have to copy the review by hand. They bring in their notebooks and focus on my writing on the board. Some Labs (I teach a science course) require hands on work so I put them in groups of four (they are very social at that age) and they enjoy working together. So I think you need to mix up how you teach these days and put some effort to meet them halfway (since they are into technology). They are good students.
My gen z grandkids are as based or more than I am as is their gen x parents and my millennial daughter — sorry folks it always goes back to how you raise your kids - I’m a super tech savvy boomer- kids are both very based and Renaissance that can fix/ do anything— including ride horses/work stock , butcher, garden and make 6 figures in a career— parents don’t raise kids anymore— they depend on daycare and school/ after school activities to raise their kids- and so sadly most of the parents of Z gen were also raised that way — there’s gonna be a big gap from my gen ( especially with millions of immigrants who know basic survival strategies)
Raised all my kids the same. I have 2 based kids and one liberal. All millennials between 35 and 39. They were raised outdoors hunting and fishing and shooting from 5 years old.
I don't doubt he's correct in terms of the Gen Z bunch he encounters, but I think how Gen Z behaves has a lot to do with where they're born and the parents they're born to. Gen Z raised in flyover country probably aren't as far gone as those in blue enclaves, though there's likely some with cellphone and video addictions.
Kids are not taught self discipline. To work for what they want. Desires easily gratified so they don't try hard to push themselves. I see it in my work place and it's quite frustrating to see them on their phones or in the break room taking a break when they feel like it. This is a medical profession and I'm the team leader watching this. Can't even walk with a purpose to get something done and by the time they casually walk down the hall, I've already got what was needed. I have to constantly tell myself that "this is not my problem "
"Everyone wants to be the leader, they want to change the World, but no one helps mom with the dishes"

...minds who are interested in the sciences typically are more disciplined...
...your students are fortunate they have you for an instructor....
Thanks! I really enjoy spending time with them.

...they are pretty based here in Mayberry....
I absolutely agree
Are they useless, or is it that they can't control them?
...valid observation...
Thank you.

Isn't that the truth! " No one wants to help mom with the dishes" Great Analogy!
This is probably true in your locale but varies according to state, county, town- plenty of good kids still around in rural areas
Previouse generations raised them,to be that way....
...truth....
...compelling addendum...
Agree! Most of our Pts. 18-39 are lost, sad, hopeless and confused!
