I believe cholesterol is also required for the production of certain hormones that the body requires.
You are correct. Cholesterol is the base for sex hormones. By reducing our cholesterol levels, they are reducing our natural sexual bodily functions. I couldn't find the article in my quick search, but I remember reading somewhere that the vast majority of men with erectile dysfunction are on statins.
edit to add: According to The Perfect Health Diet by Paul Jaminet, the AMA's official number of what determines "high" is set too low, so the AMA is pushing people with normal cholesterol levels onto statins, too.
I have been prescribed to take them and after two weeks, I couldn't get out of bed without help. Joint pain was severe. I tried three different brands for my doctor before I found the solution, I changed doctors!
I also remembered that Vitamin D is made from cholesterol, too. So they artificially lower your cholesterol to make vitamin D production more difficult for your body. And there are a lot of diseases where one of the hallmarks is low Vitamin D, including the kidney disease that I have and several kinds of cancers.
