I grew up in the 60's nd 70'a Graduated from HS in '71 College in '75, You wouldn't have seen any handicapped kids in school bc they didnt attend at all. They went to special schools
No special needs kids were in any public schools until the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EHA) passed in '75 — frequently referred to as Public Law 94-142 — it requires that all public schools accepting federal funds must provide equal access to education for children with physical and/or mental disabilities.
I was graduated as a Speech Language Pathologist and the term "social pragmatics" were not even coined at the time. They were just beginning to look into the social aspects of language when I graduated in '75.
Autism was discovered in 1943 by Leo Kanner, but most of these were the severe form. Not until the 1970's was it seen as a developmental disorder and in 1980's it became a spectrum. So many of those who were bright and on the spectrum were not picked up until then.
I knew of a few who were on the spectrum or at the very least had social/OCD issues. They were all in my husband's University Physics Dept in the 70's when he was studying for his PhD. One of them graduated but was so socially awkward he was hired by the physics dept at the university as he couldn't get a job.
So there were kids on the spectrum but certainly NOT as many as there are now. The increase in Autism can be attributed to many things, but I think vaccines are a major culprit.
It took awhile to see handicapped kids attending public schools in many states even after the EHA was passed. In the early 80's a saw quite a few of them (some autistic) in a two room school house where I served a number of young children preschool handicapped kids, mostly autistic. Some were not even seen by public schools as they were too involved even for the local CP center to pick up at the time.
OTHO, I knew of noone who was allergic to peanuts nor gluten when I was growing up.
No trans either, but even most of the gays were in the closet at the time until the 70's
