He was part of the charade. An actor in a play, timed perfectly for full effect. Did they threaten his family and himself with horrible consequences if he didn't play along? Did they promise him riches and a quick exit from prison? Is he even in prison at all? Means, motive, and opportunity are all perfectly satisfied with that operation. A small investment of time, money and expertise was expended to reap massive rewards. If they have the capability, which they certainly do, a better question would be, 'Why WOULDN'T they do it?'
