I have a flock of hens and I love raising my chickens. They're fun, and in a couple of months I'll be able to sell some eggs on the side. It's not hard to take care of chickens, but predator-proofing is the hardest task you'll face. Just shows you how evil the government is now that they'll encourage people to beg and cry rather than take care of themselves and be self-sufficient.
