A lot of people hold democracy as one of the highest values. It is not. It is just a tool which can both be used well and poorly. There is a reason why democratic-style states in the modern world have constitutions. Because in a democracy without a constitution, you do essentially get the tyranny of the majority against the minority. We don't even have to look far for good examples of this. In ancient Athens, they used to hold votes on almost everything. This includes on what to do with surrendered territory. In the following example (the Wikipedia article doesn't mention this, but there was almost definitely a vote on what to do with the surrendered populous):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Melos
To summaries, the ancient Athenians invaded Melos with no good justification. And then, when Melos refused to surrender, once they won, the voted to execute every man on that island. It was absolutely done democratically. But it was also absolutely evil.
Also, let's not forget that the Athenians voted to execute Socrates because they didn't like what he was saying. A really old example of the trampling of free speech. What is interesting is that Socrates was against the Athenian form of Democracy. He thought that having everyone voting regardless of mental ability was stupid. There is an irony in that the Athenians voting to execute him actually proved his point. They ended up regretting it and his execution was later on seen as a terrible mistake. And it was the very universal unrestrained democracy that he was against that made that all possible. Modern constitutions are supposed to prevent this and this is the reason they exist. However, many leftists these days have no idea about this and that is why they have no respect for the constitutions of their countries. They like the idea of mob rule.
In The Patriot Mel says at the levy vote at the State House, and Im paraphrasing, Why would I trade 1 tyrant 3000 miles away for 3000 tyrants 1 mile away? Pure Democracy will almost certainly turn into the tyranny of the 51 over the 49. Our Founding Fathers knew this very well and that is why we are a Constitutional Republic and why the electoral college was implemented as well the Senate being chosen by the State legislatures and not by direct vote.
