There are lots of differences between translations based on Textus Receptus and similar manuscripts [eg KJV, NKJV etc] , and those based on Nestle-Arland/Bible Societies [NIV and most translations published by Zondervan]
What we have is the issue of transmission of the Greek manuscripts for New Testament. In the old Testament there are differences between the Masoretic Text and the Septuagint/LXX
Let me declare my preference for the Textus Receptus NKJV - on this particular verse my question has always been that how does one know to fast in case one comes across such a demonic? You cannot fast 100% of the time because you would soon die.
Equally in Matthew 9:14 Jesus is asked - by John's disciples - why His disciples don't fast His response is they don't because the bridegroom is with them but they will. So if when Jesus' disciples were trying to cast out this demonic they are in this period of being with the bridegroom and they are not fasting then they would not have been able to cast it out, so why the rebuke?
Finally Jesus is clear - ONLY this type of demonic is cast out with Prayer and Fasting - it is not a general statement and to suggest it is is not good exegesis.
