He refused to get a hip replacement as he was fearful of “them” performing a blood transfusion. I think he was trying to protect his DNA as well. I feel bad that he was in such physical pain. He was also a Jehovah Witness (sp?), who do not believe in meddling with blood.
Agree, and I thought he had both hips replaced. I’ve seen some total joint replacements require blood but usually older pts w/complications. Also, when MD farts around during surgery. The excellent surgeons don’t waste time in the operating room. Those that do allow greater time to lapse during surgery, have greater blood loss. . . He could have donated his own blood ahead of surgery and they had devices back then that orthopedic surgeries were using to salvage and filter blood loss for replacement transfusion.

I would think it's very unlikely to need a transfusion from a hip replacement.
