Who knows exactly. I would guess the answer is along the same lines as to why the NFL has symbolism in their Super Bowl halftime shows. In other words maybe it's rituals. Actually that could be it (at least as far as the halftime stuff is concerned) cuz when you think about it there's usually like 60,000+ people at these games- that's a lot of people to be unknowingly taking part in a ritual.
