Didn't Gaddafi try to back Libyan money with gold until there was an unfortunate accident ?

IIRC he asked for oil payments to be made in gold.

He was also trying to set up a currency zone like the EURO, with the Lybian currency as the central backing which would have prevented the destabilization of its neighbors via currency manipulation.
