Semantics. It doesn't matter if you're splicing it in with CRISPR or you're selectively breeding the virus with serial infections, you're still working towards the same goal of getting the experimental organism to acquire a new trait of interest. I've been in enough biochem labs to know it's just a technique and there are plenty of reasons to do it.
But here's the rub, Obama instituted a moratorium on such research. It is widely suspected that this type of work is what lead to the coronavirus. If you still believe the BS story about the pangolin in the wet market, you still have to acknowledge that the possibility of a leak exists. That danger that a virus might escape and kill tens of millions of people should be a crystal clear warning to anyone with a brain (and that includes any scientists with the training to do the work) to stop such work immediately.
Again, I don't care how you're making a virus more infectious or transmissible. The fact that you're doing it at all is the problem. F off with the word games Pfizer.
Also, keep in mind any research outlawed in the US is just outsourced to other countries where the laws are more lax or the governments can be bought out. There truly are no inhibitions to absolutely anything people want to do...there is always a way...
