It was sanctions, not socialism. the sanctions were imposed because the USA did not agree with the elections, AND they tried to claim there was another 'real' president.
Chavez was elected in 1999 and the economic sanctions imposed in 2017.Those 17 years put Venezuela in the shitter, the sanctions of 2017 flushed the toilet. It was the socialist policies of Chavez and then Maduro that ruined the country. Source: boots on the ground, first hand observation.
