Our first authority figures are our care givers/parents, and we mimic their behaviors. As we get older, we see that our parents may have been wrong about a few things (from personal experience; my parents were somewhat irresponsible and cold-hearted). We then, as adults, have to decide who we really want to be, and we begin to apply independent thought to our actions. This is what I gleaned from teacher's comment.
