Because you are getting rid of people to make the town compact. Farmers have to get to town to trade. Workers have to either get to their jobs or be shoveled into vertical apartments just so that it stays compact.
And, at a certain threshold of population, this has to expand in size just to manage the population flow through the market area.
You miss the point. Look up new urbanism if you want to see the research. And look up strong towns to see the conservative argument in favor of returning to the traditional way of town planning.
Other than that I can’t help you. All I can say is that car dependent sprawl is one of the greatest scams to be pushed on us as a country. It has made us fractured as a society, dependent on foreign oil for basic mobility (when you live in sprawl you must drive to everything whether you want to or not, instead of getting to drive when you want to), and it has reduced our built environment to a shitty series of strip malls, box stores, and plastic houses. It has made a mockery of our tradition of building towns and villages, paved over our natural areas, and made everything ugly and corporate. And conservatives have been duped into defending this as somehow freedom or whatever when instead it is fully top down dictated all the way from the federal level.
Sprawl has been done to us. Nobody voted for it. Nobody wanted it. Some shadowy hand made that happen and the results have been a disaster.
No more. Whether we stop it on our own, or wait for it to bankrupt us will yet be determined. But it cannot continue. The math does not work.
I sayid they built fucking towns that were compact for people to walk in what’s hard to understand about that
