If it was a seismic survey ship, then it’s perfectly reasonable that it would be around when an earthquake strikes. They are supposed to gather data from earthquakes after all. And since New Zealand is on the southern end of the Ring of Fire, there’s going to be lots of seismic activity in that area, regardless of what ships are present.
