Some people think it’s because a lot of defense missiles are stored there in the middle of nowhere.

I believe there are still nukes there and also in North and South Dakota. Malstrom AFB in Great Falls is the home of the 341st Missile Wing (341 MW) of the Air Force Global Strike Command according to Wikipedia.
