I remember an article where someone was reminiscing about his youth, talking about the "black" part of town (post-war, pre-60s). Black-owned shops, a black-owned movie theater. Kids out playing in the streets, grandparents sitting out on the porch, either chatting or listening to the radio, keeping an eye on the kids. Black churches. Nicely dressed people. Just middle-class people being middle class.

So much lost. So much deliberately destroyed.
