Supposedly the number of train derailments in the US averages around 1,500 a year.
Just doing a cursory search for "US train derailments" should bring up plenty of material to start wading through.
That seems insanely large. I never hear stories about them.
Yeah, I thought it was a crazy number, too. Last year there was supposed to be around 900.
From what I've been reading, the vast majority of derailments are pretty minor. Like one car just jumping the tracks a bit or something, and they're fixed in a few hours or so.
The major derailments that make the news like the ones we're discussing here are thankfully very rare.
Huge disasters like the PA one happen maybe a handful of times in a decade.
