The ubiquity of Personal Injury Law Firm websites for rail accidents indicates rail accidents are common. Some cites have very old stats like their copy was written 10 years ago.
Is it possible all these sites are recent fakes to provide cover? Sure. Is it probable? Probably not.
Just another example, this firms site has been registered since 1999.

I heard an explanation from an independent journalist that the definition of derailment is very liberal... But that full derailment (like the recent one in Ohio) are rare
That’s right, any time a rail car leaves the track it is classified a derailment. I used to work at a company that received raw materials by rail. The railroad there had cars slip off the tracks a couple times. They called each event a derailment.
The cargo has a big impact on public awareness too. If seven rail cars filled with pallets of breakfast cereal fall over in a farm field people don’t pay much attention. But, understandably, cars filled with hazardous chemicals leave a lasting impression because of their damaging impact.
