Try and institute traditional math instruction in the classroom and you're going to face resistance - a lot of it. I've been fighting this battle for 25 years. Math is not cute, but often tedious, and not meant to be fun. That doesn't mean it can't be interesting. It requires memorization of basic concepts such as times tables, the order of operations, and how to identify and isolate a variable, to name a few. No phones, just patience and a lot of mental discipline. Sorry folks, that's not feel-good news, but it's true. Until we get back to rigor and discipline in the classroom, scores are going to suck. The covid bullshit only exacerbated the problem.

If these students could read they would be really mad at you right now.
Interestingly, you use the same mental systems to learn a language.
You have to memorize grammar tables. There's also an order of operations.
Or like learning an instrument. Practice, practice, practice.
Memorize.
