It does have the polygonal barrel. No paddle mag release. The original ones had them, but the ATF said it was to easy to convert to select fire, so the one I have was a later import without the paddle mag release.
I'm surprised that was the justification.
ANY HK or HK clone can easily be modified to select fire in minutes even with the shelf.
However, that's a big no-no and can get you into some serious trouble.
The thing is though, do you REALLY need select fire? Probably not, so no need to risk jail time over something you don't need.
In a SHTF scenario and complete societal breakdown, you could easily make the modifications with simple hand tools if you really needed to so again, why do that now when you risk serious consequences?
So back to the original point, I don't understand why the paddle mag release was the justification, but then again, there's a lot about the ATF that doesn't make much sense.
Fantastic rifle you have there though. Have you considered sending the buffer and trigger pack in to Bill Springfield for some trigger work and his improved buffer and piston? It's a solid improvement over stock.
Also grab you a #17 locking piece while you still can. That combo makes for a nice shooter.
I've fired full auto rifles in the past and they didn't really trip my trigger. I much prefer semi auto. I find that precision fire is far more effective in keeping heads down. Suppressing fire is best saved for squad weapons. Spray and pray isn't really my style.
I will do some research into the upgrades you suggested. I haven't played with it much, as I use a FAL for the service rifle steel target matches. I have also done the steel target matches with a Remington 1917, it slow going, but when I hit, the target definitely goes down. The AR shooters score hits, but din't always knock the silhouettes down. Lots of fun!
