I know the gov wouldn't want it released because it shows their crime, but is there an actual reason to back out on releasing?

Yes. I'm going to write this from the perspective of a bureaucrat, Congresscritter, or some other functionary that's a part of the system. That perspective is important. Here goes.
There's a lot of populism running around today, people saying that we should just revolt against gov't and reject it, that we can go back to a simpler time with a small colonial gov't and sort things out on our own like the Founders dreamed.
That's a fairy tale. We're watching right now what happens when gov't abdicates its responsibility and stops doing its job. You stop enforcing the law and we go back to 1970s New York. No, to 1920s Chicago. No, to the Wild West of the 1860s and 70s. We go back to where people sorted out their problems quick and dirty. We go back to when local strongmen and criminals ran whole counties, bought off any gov't official they wanted and terrorized the rest. We like to look back on history with rose-colored glasses, but that's lie. And if you've ever read about Tamany Hall or the human smuggling efforts of Boston where fresh off the boat Irish were effectively transitioned straight into wage slavery, the women into prostitution, and their votes totally owned by the local political boss. America with limited gov't was a savage place many times. This is why we had people get away with lynchings and witch trials and tarring and feathering and all of that. Weak law enforcement encouraged men to take matters into their own hands - and it was frequently ugly.
And it's not just crime. What happens when Medicare fails and retirees and pensioners are left without that incredibly generous gov't support? What happens when the thieves who looted the social security system don't make their payments on time? Exactly what they did before. They ran out their savings, relied on family, then died at home in their beds 30 years younger than they do now (on average).
And when the social welfare system collapses... You think the racial issues are bad now. Just wait until the social welfare system collapses and all of the sudden all of those people who sit at home all day doing nothing while they take a gov't check are suddenly kicked out of their housing, left on the streets, and now, they're starving because the EBT card won't work. You think crime's bad now. We've all seen the looting that happens after a race riot. Now do that in every major and mid-sized city in the country. And don't forget about those "white trash" people we disregard from this conversation who consume half of the welfare. Those trailer parks aren't free either, and if you don't think those people would get ugly, you haven't been around those kind of people much. Take Jerry Springer and make it reality. That's what's going to happen all over this country, even in rural fly-over country when welfare collapses. Every Walmart, Target, Dollar General... you name it. They'll all be looted. The rednecks will steal literally anything not nailed down to survive, and they'll get creative enough to dismantle what they need. Farm boys know what I'm talking about.
Our gov't right now is the thin line that keeps this society from ripping itself to shreds. We no longer have that shared Christian morality or common European cultural background to rely on to keep people in line either. The communists have shredded it.
If you release those tapes and the faith in the FBI, DoJ, and federal gov't completely dissolves because those tapes clearly show that the ENTIRE F---ing BUREAUCRACY was in on wholesale treason to destroy not only Trump but all of his supporters, you risk having the whole thing collapse. You can't trust the system or rely on working within the system to fix the system when it becomes clear that the system has declared war on you. If the People see this, we risk seeing the whole bloody temple collapse around us.
And remember, food comes to the grocery store every 3-4 days. Just in time inventory management. If things collapse, there is absolutely no backstop. Food, water, electricity, public safety, transportation, essential services. All of it goes away. And the response from those who committed the treason will be martial law and iron-fisted dictatorship, because if they don't, they're looking at Wild West justice.
That's the counterargument. You decide whether you find it compelling or not. I merely present it as enthusiastically as I can so you can think it through.
People will probably downvote you out of reflex and emotion (I thought GAW was above such things; guess the bar was set too high recently), but you do have a point or two or several regarding the brutality of the past. I will commend you for bringing it up when people tend to conveniently and cowardly ignore it.
The last part of your sentence: "when people tend to conveniently and cowardly ignore it." is the most important. It is due to OUR COUNTRY'S history being changed...
And that is why the 2nd Amendment is EVEN more important now than ever.
Notice, when EVERY ONE of the 6 JAN prisoners were picked up...there was AN OVERWHELMING presence of LE...why is that?
TO OVERCOME ANY RESISTANCE...
AND that is why there is a VERY STRONG PUSH BY THE ATF to digitize the records of WHO HAS A WEAPON...
I guess there will come a time to play "knock, knock, who's there?" scenario!!!
