This is the only reason any politician or public figure brings up how Jewish they are, it's also the reason why they go out of their way to make a big show about converting if they weren't already pretending to be Jewish. They couldn't care less, they aren't religious in any way, in fact they loathe religion and think religious people are stupid, but holy shit if it isn't convenient as hell to call yourself a Jew so any and all criticism aimed towards you can be written off as "antisemitic"!
