How this works: An organization tries to contact a citizen to pick up a certain amount of money, and they don't within a certain time period, so since it's legally not their money they hand it over to "unclaimed property" departments in each state (could be a paycheck, stock dividends, money left over in an account, etc.)
How to possibly find monies or how I did it: find your state website on https://unclaimed.org/search/
My state allows free searches, I thought I heard some people say they had to pay or something?
Look up people by last name (can be your last name, can look up friends and family and tell them, etc.)
If you find someone you know, let them know
I don't know how they file, I guess just follow instructions on site, then I assume they'll mail you a check?
Good luck and let us know if you find anything
I actually know someone who found over $200k. Sure wish that had been me. Apparently the person worked several years ago in another state and had some kind of stock options or stock awards that got lost in the shuffle. I don’t understand how that’s possible because any options I ever had in the past expired when I left a company and I am not comfortable pressing for personal financial details, but I saw the screenshot on the unclaimed property website, and last week they received the payout after having jumped through several hoops to prove identity.
That's wild
as I commented, someone I know of found a paycheck they hadn't picked up (dunno how that was miscommunicated)
someone else I know of has some stock dividends listed that looks like half a grand (also dunno how this happens)
I've posted on this before elsewhere and then seen people post about it independently, I was just reminded of it again to alert people about because it seems to apparently be a legit thing and I'm sure recovering $20-$100+ would be appreciated
