Pretty decent summary. The post headline jumps to an unwarranted conclusion about a "corrupt EPA." There's a lot of goop to dispose of and the EPA is just coordinating disposal site approval, as some sties have maxed out and can no longer take contaminated water or soil. (5 trucks have had to return because of this.) This is a perfectly reasonable measure to assure that the removal process is not hindered by refusals.
Yes, the EPA may be "corrupt," but not yet on account of how they are performing in this instance. Always give somebody the opportunity to do the right thing.
They don't say much about hydrogen chloride, but the simple story is that when it combines with water, you get hydrochloric acid...which is stomach acid. If you swallow some in the water, you would know it and spit it out. Or you would swallow it and it would just mingle with your own gastric juices. If you breathed it, you would feel a burning in your lungs. At which point, go somewhere else. Wearing a damp bandana over your nose and mouth might help (the HCl would become acid in the bandana...which would be sacrificed, but better it than you).
Logistical issues are understandable. However, there's plenty of reason to believe that the EPA is not trustworthy, corrupt and malicious toward the people it governs.

EPA telling the people of Ohio that it's okay to drink the contaminated water as they fake a live demo is outright malicious. Therefore, any further actions they take in this event is suspect. So them putting a pause on cleanup makes me think they are letting the chemicals sit there so they do more damage to the environment.
Also, logic tells me that if the chemicals were disposed of too hastily, the soil, air, water and farmland would only take a little bit of damage and would recover quicker. The longer the toxins are present, the more damage it can do to the atmosphere.
So, according to you, haste is good even if it results in 5 truckloads of chemical waste being refused and sent back to East Palestine, with no assurance that future truckloads will find a resting place. Uh-huh. Logic that operates without regard to the real world.
I think the issue you have is that you're not factoring in the suspicious and malicious behavior of EPA. Disregarding that makes you illogical. Ultimately, the logistics don't matter if there is criminal intent to do harm.
They never told the places they were transporting to that there were hazardous chemicals in the cargo. If the cities knew, they would never allow this. Not only that, but they blew up the cargo when it arrived in those cities so that the chemicals can spread on the ground and in the air. That's why there were massive fires in Mexico and deer park.
You're harping on the logistics of cargo being refused and sent back when the focus should be on the corruption involved in the transporting. There's a group of people trying to kill an entire population and you're arguing about transport efficiency. Is this what you call logic that operates with regard to the real world?
You are acting like the EPA is a monolith, a single person. They are an organization, of many people. There are good and bad people, working under good and bad policies and management decisions. One has to look at the specific situation.
Nobody tells anyone that hazardous chemicals are in the cargo. The only non-hazardous chemicals might be water or sand. Plenty of coal and petroleum. I have seen tanker cars of molten sulfur. That is what runs our industrial economy. If you didn't know this before, now you know. Pay attention to what is labeled on tanker cars in freight trains. It is an education.
They did not "blow up" the vinyl chloride. They drained it to relieve the pressure that was building to an actual explosion, and burned it off to reduce it to less hazardous chemical species. It would help to understand what happened. And I don't follow any linkage to Mexico and "deer park."
I am focused on the problem of getting the contamination removed from the human environment. You are focused on some kind of investigation that in no case will be less than months in duration, if not interminable. Tell you what...let's get the poison out of the way and work on the corruption right next.
