...the PCR can find bits of stuff in anything if you adjust the magnification.

Correction: adjust the amplification. As a near-enough analogy, you carry out multiple duplications until you have enough "stuff" to analize.

1 - 2 - 4 - 6 - 8 - 16 - 32 - 64 - 128 - 256 - 512 - 1024 - 2048 etc.
