I would also add that some of them might be suffering from some sort of PTSD.

Going from a relatively peaceful and carefree life to being kidnapped by your own tyrannical government to be forced into the battlefield with little training, even littler equipment and supplies, against the Russian bear with death promised to all who refused to fight in general...

The mind might not take it anymore and probably would just shut down at the worst moments...
