It does happen occasionally, but on one of these small biz jets they are usually above it at 40,000' and above in the cruise. The weather radar will pick up bad weather from quite a distance, although CAT not always.
Exactly. It does happen, trying to recall when a passenger hit some pretty bad with a large rate of decent in secs, and a few of the passengers hit the overheads etc. I'll have to go look it up, but yes rare.

FAA said they had no deaths from air turbulence from 2009-2022. Pretty rare.
