Thanks. Made me look at the Cliff notes of Ukrainian history (https://www.britannica.com/place/Ukraine/World-War-I-and-the-struggle-for-independence). It didn't name any specific person as a trigger (and Lenin died in 1924), but Ukraine looks like it was always the bone of contention among its neighbors in all its history. It's a wonder it exists at all.

Before WWI the western part was part of Austria-Hungary. The eastern part was obviously Russian. Surprise! I mean Odessa was founded by Catherine the Great. Crimea was also taken during her time, from the ottomans.
But the tactics of balkanization, used by the KM, are old and insidious. Convincing people that they are 'different', 'special', 'chosen', etc etc. Division always.
