I know tons of folks here are big on digital currency. There are some scenarios where digital currency has relevance and has some excellent attributes. I even hold a fair amount, but only because it does have some uses. Unfortunately, there are some very serious flaws that limit their usefulness. We all take for granted that the internet will always be here, I don't have that much faith in the internet being in existence. It has extreme vulnerabilities and relies on computing devices and electricity. These are not the foundations you want for your only means of exchange, there must remain a physical currency for events that restrict or eliminate access to technology. I am specifically speaking about natural disasters akin to hurricanes, but there are other natural disasters that can also cripple or destroy local area wide network access. I believe there will always be a need for multiple paths for monetary exchange. Eliminating all but one is fairly shortsighted, but if we can only have one, I highly recommend a physically backed monetary instrument that everyone can lay hands upon.
