You need to understand churches in Ukraine are not like churches here so dont use American comparisons.
The ORTHODOX church has always been politically based. The patriarch is under Putin's control. They meet regularly.
The CATHOLIC church is non-political. Their patriarch may preach on how to deal with this spiritually and regarding safety but do not preach government.
In the past when USSR was tearing down churches or turning them into museums or govt offices, it was specifically the catholic churches. Orthodox churches were not touched because they were in compliance with Russian govt.
Similar when nazi's allowed (at least for a while) Lutheran churches as long as they preached nazi propaganda. All others were destroyed.
I speak of personal experience myself and my parents. We lived through it. The Gulag was mostly regarding the camps. I believe the post was related to the churches.

You don't know much about Orthodoxy in Russia. You should read the Gulag Archipelago, at least.
