Its always been fake news. Never in history has journalism been about anything other than covering for TPTB and propagandizing the People. Those are the essence and the reason for its existence at all.
There have been exceptions - journalists who take their job of serving the people rather than the institutions seriously. If you haven't read any Mencken, you should.
It has gotten worse though, especially in Canada. If you look back on how governments/prime ministers had fallen in Canadian history, it was usually one scandal where the public finally turned against them. The scandal had to be reported by the media in some way. Our current black face overload in Canada has had at least 5 scandals I can think of of the top of my head that were enough to remove previous prime ministers. Jean Chretien (same party as black face Hitler currently in charge) resigned over millions of dollars being funneled to media organizations linked to their government for advertising services. The current fuhrer does exactly that on a daily basis. It has become normal for his party to funnel money to their own companies or NGOs regularly, on projects that make no sense and the results of which are never accounted for or audited (they're just slush funds). Furthermore, during COVID, he has almost a trillion dollars unaccounted for in spending. No one can tell the Canadian people where that money went. Media covers none of this. Also, a lot of people are on the take in these schemes, so they are essentially a guaranteed vote for him because once he's gone, the corruption would be gone as will their corruption driven income.
“Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray’s case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the “wet streets cause rain” stories. Paper’s full of them.
In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.”
– Michael Crichton
