At the height of his 2016 presidential run, porn star "Stormy Daniels" was getting all the headlines saying she had an affair with him (something that was later proven to be false).
During this time, Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid Stormy Daniels $130,000 to shut up and go away. Later, Trump reimbursed Cohen for this money and a payment of $130,000 was filed in Trump's taxes as Legal Fees.
Although this was money paid from Trump to his lawyer, they're arguing it wasn't legal fees and therefore a falsification of business records.
The DA argues that the NDA that the payoff bought (that wasn't respected) helped trump get elected and therefore was an illegal campaign donation if I understand the mental gymnastics properly.
