The clue is in the root of the word.

Slav

Slavs were taken prisoner and enslaved by Mongols, and Tartars in the time or Tamerlane, for example (late 14th century). This was on the same continent, so technological barriers were not a problem.

Weird how Yugo-Slav-ia was broken up and bombed to the stone age by the US forces - makes ya think.
