This is not highly unlikely in nature, where did you hear that from? I work with nature everyday and we see this exact thing all the time it’s called multi stem. Not saying I don’t agree with your message but just saying you’re completely wrong about this being a rare event.
Well, I've never seen two saguaros grow together like this before, and I understand the reason garden plants need to be thinned when they're too close together is that they will compete with each other and become sick. Multi stem is from a single plant, not two separate plants, or do I have that wrong?
