I was of the understanding that in the u.s you could not legally own a firearm if you were found to be suffering from a mental illness, excuse my knowledge as I do not reside in the United States.

Not on federal property. That’s why not even antifa had guns on J6. Ghetto parts of DC - SE and NE - definitely not enforced.
