No you cant turn off gas just as easily. Electric with a smart meter can be turned off remotely. To turn of gas they need to send someone to your property and actually turn the lever.

Cmon think it through.

I used to survery gas lines, and I still work in the gas industry.

Natural gas can be shut off from the main distribution center, or from a number of smaller little regulation shacks.
