Prior to WWII, what is now called the "defense department" was more accurately called the "war department" for good reason...
After WWII the name was changed to the "defense department" to hide that it was still the "war department" for bad reasons...
That's a better way to say it!
I felt it was more "complimentary" than "better," but I'll take it. :)
