Every time that I can think of that blackmail has been used on people, there's some sort of "normalization" process that hits the media and public reality. Back in the 60s/70s, it was simple to blackmail a guy who slept with another woman so they started normalizing having affiars, getting divorced (think magazine articles, TV shows, movies). By the late 70s/80s, same techniques used to remove the "stigma" of being gay.
Now it's trans issues and pedophilia. Destigmatize. Normalize. Decriminalize.
