I'm beginning to think he might be. If the bad guys can get people out of prison so can't the good guys. Maybe the local authorities were on the side of the white hats & they know they can't tell his wife anything because she will tell the wrong people (It seems that she is still in touch with the people she used to prostitute for, who were trying to get her to poison him - at least it seemed that way from her conversation) His marriage was obviously less than ideal (he was always afraid she might poison him)
