Some of those people were definitely killed. To say the white hats are capable of "faking a death to save someone" is the same as saying the enemy is capable of killing said person.

I suspect in some cases the enemy got fooled and think they actually succeeded. They appear to be evil, but really not very smart. Too much in-breeding or infiltration by white hats at top level?
