Just for clarity - they did drop the "subjects" thing in 1983, although there are still a few outlier cases where someone can be a "subject." Of course in reality we most definitely are barely above slave status but actually using the sub-word made it all a bit too obvious so they needed to wind it back a bit. Our passports now have replaced "British Subject" with "British Citizen."
